18/8 is a familiar trade description for acier inoxydable with nominal chromium and nickel content near 18% and 8%. Type 304 is the grade most often associated with that description.
For a acheteur, the practical distinction is between a requested grade and evidence that connects that grade to the finitioned goods. Start by naming the standard and grade in the RFQ and bon de commande. Then define what documents, échantillons and checks will connect incoming sheet or coil to formed bottle bodies and the final inspection lot.
Composition is also only one part of the product decision. The bottle body, inner liner, outer shell, couvercle, gasket, coating and decorated areas can involve different materials. Food-contact requirements depend on the finitioned article, components, intended use and marché de destination. A statement about 304 steel alone does not establish FDA, EU or other market conformité for the complete bottle.
304 vs 201: What Changes for Acheteurs
304 and 201 are both austenitic acier inoxydable families, but their alloy balance differs. 201 generally replaces part of the nickel used in 304 with manganese and nitrogen. That difference can affect corrosion behavior, forming response, appearance after processing and the way a project specification should be controlled. It does not support a blanket claim that every 201 product is unsafe or that every 304 product is automatically suitable for every beverage and market.

Review the finitioned article, intended conditions, components and destination-market requirements
Acheteurs comparing stainless grades for different use conditions can also review the 304 vs 316 acier inoxydable guide.
Which Verification Methods Are Conclusive?
No single usine-floor shortcut answers every alloy question. The evidence should match the purchasing risk, échantillon stage and acceptance decision. A low-risk catalog review may start with fournisseur records. A private-label order with a strict grade requirement may add incoming material checks, retained échantillons and independent analysis.
Material Records and Batch Traceability
Ask what document identifies the grade, fournisseur, coil or heat reference and receiving lot. Then ask how that reference follows material through cutting, forming and assembly. A material certificate can be useful, but a certificate stored in a general folder is not enough if the usine cannot connect it to the parts used for the order.
Traceability does not need to become a complicated software project. A receiving record, material label, production traveler, lot code and retained échantillon can create a practical chain. The acheteur and fournisseur should agree which records are retained, who reviews them and what happens when identification is missing.
PMI/XRF Screening
Positive Material Identification describes methods used to compare a material with an expected alloy. Handheld XRF is common because it can screen several elements without cutting a large échantillon. It can be useful for checking nickel, chromium, manganese and other detectable elements, but the result still depends on instrument calibration, reference libraries, surface condition, coating removal where appropriate, measurement time and operator practice.
XRF does not measure carbon. That limitation matters when the grade distinction depends on carbon or when a specification requires a result beyond the instrument’s capability. Record the instrument, method, échantillon location and result instead of relying only on a photograph of a device pointed at metal.
Third-Party Laboratory Analysis
Independent laboratory analysis may be appropriate when the order value, marché de destination, dispute risk or personnaliséer specification needs stronger evidence. The acheteur should define the échantillon-selection method, chain of custody, requested method, reporting units and acceptance range before testing. The laboratory should choose a method suitable for the elements and grade distinction being evaluated.
A report is strongest when it identifies the tested échantillon and connects that échantillon to the production lot. Testing an unrelated display échantillon does not verify the goods packed for shipment. The JOOYO Drinkware quality-control process can be used to discuss where acheteur-requested checks fit into sampling and inspection.
Magnet, Spot-Reagent and Salt Tests: Screening Only
A magnet can reveal useful differences in some situations, but it cannot prove 304. Austenitic acier inoxydable may become slightly magnetic after cold working, deep drawing or other forming.
A saltwater exposure can compare corrosion response under a stated internal protocol, but concentration, temperature, finition de surface, contamination, weld condition and exposure time all affect the outcome. It should not be presented as a standardized grade-identification test unless an applicable method and acceptance criteria have been agreed.
A échantillon-to-Produition Verification Workflow
Define the material requirement. State the grade for the inner body and any other stainless components, the referenced standard, intended use and marché de destination.
Review the fournisseur’s control route.
Identify the échantillon. Record whether it is a development échantillon, pre-production échantillon or production échantillon. A passing development échantillon does not automatically represent the en gros batch.
Choisissez des preuves qui correspondent au risque. Agree on records, PMI/XRF screening, retained échantillons or third-party analysis. Do not add tests that have no clear decision rule.
Set acceptance and escalation rules.
Check lot identification, retained evidence and any acheteur-requested reports before shipment release.
For a new model, the workflow should be confirmed before outillage, logo approval and en gros material purchase. Acheteurs can review the broader personnalisé drinkware manufacturing process to align material approval with développement produit, emballage and production checkpoints.
A short but precise clause is more useful than repeating “food grade” throughout an email. Identify the bottle model, required grade for each relevant component, referenced standard, approved échantillon, marché de destination and evidence required before production or shipment.
Required acier inoxydable grade and the component to which it applies
Whether alternative grades require written acheteur approval
échantillon stage and retained-échantillon requirement
PMI/XRF or laboratory method, échantillon quantity and selection rule where required
Acceptance criteria, retest process and nonconforming-material disposition
Finitioned-product documents required for the intended use and marché de destination
Do not request a report simply because it appears on a generic checklist. Ask what decision the report supports and whether it refers to the selected product and order. JOOYO Drinkware can review the requested material, échantillon and documentation route, but the final scope must be confirmed for the product and bon de commande.
FAQ acheteur
Does 18/8 always mean Type 304?
No. 18/8 is a common composition shorthand associated with Type 304, but a label or product description does not prove the grade used in a finitioned bottle. The purchase specification, batch-linked material records and an appropriate verification method provide stronger evidence.
Can a magnet prove that a bottle is 304 acier inoxydable?
No. A magnet can be a quick screening tool, but it is not a conclusive grade test. Austenitic acier inoxydable can become slightly magnetic after forming or cold working, while a weak magnetic response does not establish the exact alloy.
A calibrated handheld XRF instrument can screen several alloying elements and help compare a échantillon with an expected acier inoxydable grade. Results depend on calibration, surface condition, operator method and the alloy question. XRF does not measure carbon, so another laboratory method may be needed when carbon is relevant.
Yes. Acheteurs should define how coil, sheet, formed parts and finitioned échantillons are connected to the production lot. A report from an unrelated échantillon or an earlier order is weaker evidence than records and checks tied to the actual batch.
What should a acheteur send for material verification review?
Envoyer the bottle model, required steel grade, inside and outside material requirements, marché de destination, intended beverage use, order quantity, échantillon plan, requested documents, proposed test method and acceptance criteria. JOOYO Drinkware can then review which steps are practical for the selected project.
Review Your Material Verification Requirements
Envoyer the selected bottle or reference model, required material grade, quantity range, marché de destination, échantillon stage and the records or testing you need reviewed. JOOYO Drinkware can then discuss a practical verification route before the quotation and échantillon plan are finalized.
